The very first Jewish riddle was posed by Samson at his wedding feast to his new Philistine relatives: (Judges 14/14) “Out of the eater, something to eat and out of the strong, something sweet.”
The prize for solving the riddle within seven days was thirty sets of expensive new clothes. The Philistines could not solve the riddle and pressured Samson’s new wife until she gave them the answer: a beehive in the slayed carcass of a lion.
They returned to Samson and said: “What is sweeter than honey and stronger than a lion?” Samson replied: “Had you not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle.” Furious at his new wife’s betrayal, he left her and killed 30 Philistines to pay the debt.
