What the Book Is About
In a classic case of opposites attracting, Danny Cohen is befriended by new kid Calvin Waffle, though the two fourth graders couldn’t be more different. The boys end up having some funny adventures together involving a clever way to win a baseball game, a mystery surrounding their teacher, a lost dog, and, of course, jelly beans and donuts. Accompanying the silly stories in this two-book volume are the many doodles Danny likes to draw.
Jewish Content & Values
- Danny and his family keep kosher.
- Danny’s actions are influenced by what he has learned in Hebrew school. (“We should be good to strangers because we were strangers in Egypt”; “A half truth is a whole lie”; “Returning something that someone lost is the right thing to do.”)
- Danny’s sister mentions Jewish proverbs such as “You have two ears and one mouth, so listen more than talk” and “Do not be wise in words. Be wise in deeds.”
