I loved this book!

This book made me think more about being Jewish.

This book made keep reading right to the end. Then I read it again! Roxanne wishes to be "all American" like Kathleen and Eddie, two kids their age who are models for Roxanne and Gayle, Roxanne`s little sister. But when Liat comes along, she makes Roxanne see the world in a whole new way... right in time for the biggest tragedy yet. Read this touching book to find out what happens next!

Great Plot!

I liked this book.

This book made me think more about friendship.

this book made me think about not what you look like on the outside but on the inside. I guess the point I am making is you don't NEED to look pretty to be kind and inviting to new food, traditions ,rituals, and friends.

This book made me think more about how to fit in.

This book was just OK

This book made me think more about friendship.

If there were 2 1/2 stars I may do that, but this book was a bit boring. It also said (this is not the books fault) on the website that this book was 216 pages long.

So good

This book made me think more about friendship.

The main character Roxanne was ashamed about being Jewish but when an Israeli Girl named Liat moves to town Roxanne changes perspectives and decides to not be ashamed of her heritage. This book is great, it definitely will make you scared at some points, but the moral of the story is that your friends are there for you and you should be there for them.

good but not special

I liked this book.

This book was pretty good. I would mostly recommend it, but i found it predictable and basic. it was like pretty much every story about a girl the main characters age. Middle school, fitting in, crushes, friends, family, etc. Even though it was predictable, i still thought it was a good book. it just wasn't a book that I will remember for a while.

It was pretty predictable, and the whole story was about a girl who only cares about what other people think of her. But, it was still a pretty good story, and I really liked the ending

This book was just OK

This book taught me more about Israel.

I thought this book was just OK. The main character, an Israeli girl, didn't have a lot of self-esteem, so I kind of spent the whole book feeling sorry for her.
She has a next door neighbor move in, another Israeli girl, who has a bold fearless personality, and the main character begins to look up to her.
Overall, I think this book would be perfect for unsure pre-teens, and I personally don't fall into that category.
Happy reading!

This book was amazing. The main character spends the whole book trying to cover up who she really is and tries to fit in, in every way she can. She learns that you have to be yourself to enjoy life. She learns how to realize that not everything is what it seems. And most importantly she learns that friends are all different in different ways and that it doesn't matter where they live, it's how they treat you. I would recommend this book to all of my friends

Pretty Decent Book
Submitted 10/8/2018 by Sandstorm

Roxanne and some of the other characters seemed sort of whiny, and the book ends at a bad moment. The idea is okay, but I don't like the way it was presented. There were too many tragedies (it became a habit for the author) and it was too much of "nothing is bad compared to THIS!".

OMG!!!!!!!!שלמ😁

Submitted 10/6/2018 by Reader22

This book was just OK

I enjoyed "The Importance of Wings", it was humorous and interesting, but not my favorite book in the world. The plot was not exactly what I expected, it was a lot about the "cursed house" next door, and embracing your Jewish identity. One of the main character is kind of self-centered and dramatic, while the other is excessively "strong", with a sort of stereotypical weakness. Some parts are worth reading, including the tidy, but not "happily ever after" ending. Get it if you like books about embracing who you are and don't mind slow bits and prominent morals. If you can't handle that and have a tendency to dislike characters you may want to skip this one.

A Great Book About Finding Your Identity
Submitted 9/20/2018 by luvbball121

I really liked "The Importance of Wings" by Robin Friedman. It was an amazing story about a tween figuring out who she is in the world. I would definitely recommend this book to kids (especially ones over the age of ten, but I'm not going to limit anyone's reading) who like historical and realistic fiction.

It's OK
Submitted 9/20/2018 by MissPuppyLuvr

This book was just OK

This book taught me more about Israel.

It's alright. It doesn't really have a plot. I think really the only things about this book worth remembering are:
a) There's a fight
b)Ravit/Roxanne likes making lists
c) Liat does not like watching TV, while Ravit/Roxanne does.

Basically, Roxanne lives next to a 'cursed house'. One day, the house is for sale, and the next day, it's been sold to a girl and her dad. The girl is called Liat, and before she knows it, Ravit is bests friends with Liat. They share many adventures and eat lots of Jewish food.

Oscar Wilde wisely said: "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken." Roxanne wants to be anyone but herself. She has little self-esteem until she meets Liat who gives her a deep understanding of what it means to be proud and empowered. This is a story about friendship, growth and learning to love love oneself.

This book made me think more about friendship.

This book was really nice to read about because it's nice to hear that if you have one really good friend they could change the negative thoughts that the other friend think of themselves. For example, before Liat moved in next door, Roxanne thought is was bad to be Israeli and better to be American. Roxanne wasn't even her real name - it was her American name. When she met Liat, Liat showed her how important it was to embrace her Israeli roots and she could be proud to be both Israeli and American.

I loved this book!

This book made me think more about friendship.

Robin Freedman did an amazing job on a book about the 1980's, friendship, family, and the importance of being and excepting that you are who you are. Roxanne a girl who doesn't seem interesting shows that she has a big heart and can give hope. Roxanne throughout the story has to learn that being who you want to be is more important then being who everybody else wants you to be. I think that the acceptance of being who you are is important and the way that Freedman teaches that lesson is exceptional.

This book is SUPER GOOD!!! This book teaches you that it is not all about how you look on the outside, it's how you look on the inside. Roxanne (Rovit) thinks is's about how you dress and how you look. She tries to make herself look good but it does not always work. Until Liat comes and teaches her that it's not how you look on the outside, it's how you look on the inside.

In the book Liat moves into a house that people belive is "the cursed house." But when nothing happens for a month people start to wonder "is this house really 'the cursed house'? " Do you think it is 'the cursed house?'

I read this book and I loved it! The book takes place in the eighties, which makes it much more old school and interesting. It takes place outside of New York City. I rate this book 8/10. I gave it this because most of the book has many details, but in some spots it has just a few too many details. I think that people between the ages of 10-11 will like this book because it is a little too mature for kids younger that this. If you like horror stories, Israeli stories, drama, or old-school books, than this is the book for you.

Robin Friedman

Author of The Importance of Wings

“Writers live in the same world as everyone else. They just pay attention." – Robin Friedman

Robin Friedman was born in Israel and moved to America when she was five. Ever since she can remember, she wanted to be a writer.

Robin loves cats, reading books, and wearing gowns of all colors and styles!  Here are 3 tips she gives for becoming a successful writer:

1.  Be a person on whom nothing is lost.

This means pay attention to everything. Do more listening than talking. Use all your senses listen, see, smell, touch, and taste everything you come across.

2.  Keep paper and pen by your bed.

And in your pocket or purse. You never know when an idea will come. If you get an idea while you're in the shower, do your best to remember it until you can write it down.

3.  Write every day.

Writing is a muscle. If you don't use it, you'll lose it. Writing, like most things, needs to be done every day. You don't have to write for a long time, just half an hour at the least.
