It was a great book

Review by ATX4EVR

This book was really well written. It really, really gave first person perspective and it made me feel the way the characters felt. It is a very good book and very informational.

Very interesting!

Review by DumbledoreBoy

I read this book with my mom and it was very fun and intriguing. We couldn't stop reading it. I liked that they had to work around the crusaders. I liked that it was a girl who was modifying the rules with the support of her grandpa Solomon ben Isaac.

Review by i heart reading

When you read this book you learn about Jewish people in Troyes, France in 1096. In this book,Elvina has to make her own choices.

OK, but sort of boring

Review by ilovebooks2016

It was a good book in theory, more like a nonfiction book than fiction. If it had a lot more action and maybe some more events, it would be a great book. If you are a person who likes historical fiction, like me, you will be disappointed.

Parent Guide

Elvina, twelve-year-old granddaughter of Rashi (Solomon ben Isaac of Troyes, France, the famous Bible commentator), loves to write and read – rare interests for a girl in 11th century France. She is helping to hide a young, injured Crusader soldier who would rather be a scholar than a fighter. This could potentially be catastrophic for the Jewish community which is living under the shadow of the Crusader leader, Peter the Hermit, a fearful man with a reputation of violence. Translated from the French, and winner of the illustrious Prix Sorciéres, this beautifully written story switches from first person to third when Elvina shares her thoughts and dreams with “Mazal,” her guardian angel. The danger and suspense will appeal to kids, and many will be intrigued (and probably indignant!) by antiquated gender role differences described throughout the story. An historical afterword and glossary complete this lovely work of historical fiction.
