I thought Code Name Kingfisher was a really interesting book because it connects a girl today, Liv, with her grandmother's hidden past during World War II. I liked how the story was partly about history and the Holocaust, but also about regular middle school things like friendship, feeling left out, and trying to figure out who you are. Liv's relationship with her Bubbe felt real because at first she doesn't really understand her, but then she starts learning that older people have whole lives we don't always know about. I think this would be a good PJ Our Way choice for kids who like historical fiction and books about family mysteries. Some parts are sad and serious because of what happens to Jewish children during the war, so readers should know that going in. But I liked that the book also shows courage, friendship, and how learning your family's story can make you feel stronger."
