What the Book is About:

Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard would do anything for a laugh, and audiences loved it! This is the story of the career and legacy of the Three Stooges, from vaudeville to movies to television to internet. It follows Shemp, Moe, Larry, Curly, Joe, and Curly Joe through the timeline of their lives, and describes how the Stooges entertained the world over several decades.

Jewish Content and Values

  • The original Three Stooges were Jewish, and Jennie and Solomon Horowitz (Moe, Curly, and Shemp’s parents) were Jewish immigrants from Lithuania.
  • When Sol Horowitz wasn’t working in the garment industry, he spent his free time studying Jewish holy books and praying.

Positive Role Models

  • Jennie Horwitz, the Three Stooges’ mother, was a woman ahead of her time. In the late 1800s, when women in business were rare, she rented out rooms and became a successful real estate agent and supported her family.
  • The Three Stooges were very close and always looked out for each other. Family was of paramount importance to them and they treated Larry as a brother. In fact, it was Larry who suggested that the Three Stooges contribute part of their salary to cover Curly’s medical bills after his stroke. The Three Stooges were loyal to their country: they did their part during World War Two by entertaining the troops.

Content Advisory

Moe was bullied as a child because of his long curls. He often lied to his teachers and parents, and he dropped out of school. The Three Stooges’ slapstick humor contains plenty of violence and silly pranks. Also, some young readers might be disturbed by the fact that Curly and Shemp died suddenly and at relatively young ages.

Talk it Over

In the 1960s the Three Stooges began filming for a younger audience and decided to make their act less violent. Do you think that violence should be limited in kids’ movies? Why or why not?
More For You

The Three Stooges were added to Adolf Hitler’s personal death list after producing a short movie called You Nazty Spy. The first Hollywood film to spoof Hitler, the satire of the Nazis and the Third Reich was made when the United States was still neutral -- in 1939 -- a full year before the US entered World War Two!
