What the Book Is About

This choose-your-own-adventure story set in England during World War II is full of action, tension, and suspense. The reader assumes the role of a 10-year-old Jewish refugee who has been sent from Austria to London on the Kindertransport. “You” and your 5-year-old sister Ruthie are living in Rabbi Schonfeld’s house in London but are soon sent to homes in the British countryside to avoid the bombings in London. The reader is offered a series of options for responding to various events, resulting in a variety of outcomes. An afterword separates fact from fiction in the story and provides additional historical background.

Jewish Content & Values

  • Important events in Jewish history are described in this World War II story in which Jewish Kindertransport refugees are sent to the British countryside. The protagonist, along with others, are shomer shabbat and keep kosher.
  • There is some antisemitism, mostly in the form of non-Jews asking about Jews having horns or scoffing at rules about kosher food.
  • The inspiring historical figures of Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld and Dr. Judith Grunfeld play important roles in the book.
