What do YOU think of when you think of Hanukkah?

Here is what five PJ Our Way members have to say:

Henry, age 9, Tennessee

“To me, Hanukkah is a time when you can spend time with your family & friends. One of my many favorite parts is playing dreidel. I like to play it because I have a lucky dreidel that always lands on gimel (ג) for me, but lands on pay (פ) for everyone else. That's what I think of Hanukkah.”

Sydney, age 9, Texas

“When I think of Hanukkah, I think of…the joy of the miracle of the eight days. I also think of the fun stuff my family gets to do. Some of those things are opening presents, playing dreidel, eating jelly donuts, and making potato latkes.”

Dana, age 9, New York

“When I think of Hanukkah, I think of presents, of being Jewish, of the miracle of this holiday. I think about lighting candles, and about my friends with whom I like to celebrate this holiday and play dreidel. I love winning chocolate coins!!!"

Haya, age 11, Arizona

“This was the question I was asked by many people this year. When I think of Hanukkah I think of my mom’s homemade latkes and giving and getting. I always try to give my family gifts or make them gifts and I always get lots of gifts. I also think of Christmas and Kwanzaa (even though I don’t celebrate them). I mostly think about them because I wonder what it would be like to celebrate that holiday. The last two things I think about are cold and my birthday. During Hanukkah I love to sit in front of the fire place with a blanket and shoko cham that is what we call it in Hebrew at home, but you might call it hot chocolate. Lastly, I think about my birthday because almost every year my English birthday is on Hanukkah.

So when you think of Hanukkah, what do YOU think of?"

Hi! I'm new. My favorite holiday is Passover not Chanukah but Chanukah is still lots of fun! I love making menorahs, lighting the menorah, eating latkas, playing dreidel, saying blessings and of course opening gifts!
By the way, I like your menorah that you made, its very classic.

Banana Leaf 2
To me , Hanukkah/ Chanukah (and spelled in more ways) means a time to be together, sing joyful songs, and give thanks that the Maccabees freed us, we had enough oil to last all 8 days and that we're Jewish.
