When I read this book, I was sad to remember that the Americans were like this before. I liked that Gustave decided to step up to September Rose and be friends with her even though she was a" Negro". Calling them Negroes were like how people called them back in France.

Une livre magnifique, a wonderful book, ספר נפלא!

Review by Zephyros777

An amazing book, peppered with French phrases. It really teaches you about the feelings of WWII-era ideas about segregation. The only part that bothers me is that Gustave is not even in upstate New York, and it is only stated that he is "skating with the statue of liberty" at the end of the book, and is in fact just skating in a quickly-built skating rink. Overall, it is a very good book, going in-depth about each character's family, friends and feelings, and even as far to the background of the immigrant main character. The book teaches some French, a lot of historical ideas, and still remains to be a very fun-to-read book.
