I like how the girl has determination even though in that book girls don't have jobs and are expected to take care of the home. I like that she sticks with what she loves even when she's being prevented from doing it.

This is a sad ,but cool book.

The book is very interesting. It shows how life was a long time ago. Batya loves woodcarving, yet she’s a girl. Girls can’t take lessons either. When Batya moves away from Russia because of Pogroms she thinks it’s a free country yet the rules are still unfair. She overcomes a lot of challenges including stuff that happens to her sister.
