Amazing book. I loved the fanasty aspect.
A fascinating look at the Middle Ages. And the theme connects to today's world issues! Def a page-turner and makes you think. The author's notes about how he came up with the idea were super interesting.
Its amazing how three kids beat a war against a whole kingdom.
My dad and I read this book together and had very different opinions about it. I would have given it 0.5 stars, and he would have given it 4.5 or 5 stars. I really did not like this book because (1) I wasn't very engaged in the story, because it was confusing, (2) there were a number of bad words (e.g., "hell" and "damn"), (3) it was somewhat gory, and (4) I'm not the biggest fan of fiction - especially non-realistic fiction. My dad really enjoyed this book and thought it was terrific. He was surprised that I didn't like it (because I love history, and because he thought it was so good). In hindsight, maybe this book would have been better for older children and he thought that maybe I would have liked it more if we waited until I was older to read it (I'm 10 now). He noted that some of the mystical elements were particularly confusing for me to follow (and even to comprehend, when he explained).
This was an amazing book. I really liked the illuminations. They were very interesting. My mother is medieval studies specialist, and she told me that medieval illuminated books really look like this, including when the illustrator doesn't agree with, or is making fun of, the text, they will draw something rude!
