l loved this book! It was super interesting.
Lauren and Tara have been best friends for so long that they say "we" more often than they each say "I." But lately Lauren has been thinking that although they're a pair, because Tara gets noticed more, she's like the main dish and Lauren is her faithful side dish. The situation gets worse when they both audition for the school play and Tara is cast as the lead, while Lauren is assigned to the ensemble...all because the drama teacher doesn't believe that Chinese-Jewish-American Lauren looks the part of the "all-American" heroine and blue-eyed Tara does. Lauren struggles with whether she belongs in the play at all, or as Tara's friend. In the meantime she discovers new, previously overlooked friends in the ensemble and learns about how another Chinese-American experienced far worse consequences of prejudice than being overlooked in a play, which inspires Lauren to take action onstage and off.
