The book is very interesting. It shows how life was a long time ago. Batya loves woodcarving, yet she’s a girl. Girls can’t take lessons either. When Batya moves away from Russia because of Pogroms she thinks it’s a free country yet the rules are still unfair. She overcomes a lot of challenges including stuff that happens to her sister. I did not really like this book. While the plot is interesting enough, I really did not like the style. It felt that the writer was telling, not showing, a lot of the time, and I also felt a bit like the book wasn't getting anywhere in the first few chapters. I never managed to finish it. I personally do not recommend this book to anyone.

This was a very cool book! It's so interesting how it takes place in New York a long time ago. It makes you think about how life was like back then.
