I liked the main character Dave's personality. He's crafty, but still sweet and caring and it shows me that family always wins in the end. What I didn't love was that the orphanage had some bullies and there were some scary violence in the book. I'm 9 and I would recommend this book for ages 8-11.

This book is definitely NOT just a boys book. It was SOOOOOOOO good!!!!! I hope other girls like this. I recommend this book for ages 9+. Hope you enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a story about an 11 year old boy in New York City whose parents died and none of his family wanted to take care of him. He goes to an orphanage in Harlem and finds out that the person in charge stole his carving. Dave sneaks out at night to run away and meets many interesting people. Will Dave succeed to get his carving and run away or will he have to stay in the terrible orphanage forever?
